A yacht is both an asset and a sanctuary, and its registration should be handled with the same discretion and care the vessel itself deserves. Gerli & Co. registers pleasure and commercial yachts under the Panama flag and the Marshall Islands flag, advising owners, family offices, captains and brokers on the structure that best protects privacy, simplifies operations and satisfies financiers and insurers.
Panama is internationally recognised — the Panama Canal made it a household name in shipping — but its maritime influence reaches far beyond the Canal. For yachts, the Panama flag offers a fast and well-understood registration process, worldwide recognition, and a registry experienced with both private and commercially operated pleasure craft. We obtain the provisional documentation quickly so the yacht can move, then perfect the permanent patent and radio licence once title is recorded.
For larger and superyacht-class vessels, the Marshall Islands flag is frequently the registry of choice: white-listed, finance-friendly, technologically modern, and well regarded by the superyacht industry, with flexible administration for private yachts in commercial use. We structure the owning company and register the yacht through International Registries, Inc. (IRI), with the same end-to-end care.
Panama registers both private (pleasure) and commercially operated yachts, and the requirements differ by use. For a private yacht, the file centres on proof of ownership, the owner's or owning-company's documents, the yacht's technical particulars and tonnage, and the radio licence application; smaller pleasure craft benefit from a streamlined process. A commercially operated yacht additionally carries the statutory safety, security and MLC obligations of a commercial vessel. As with ships, a re-flagging yacht needs a deletion certificate from its prior flag, and older yachts or certain types may require an entry inspection.
For megayachts, the RMI Yacht Registry distinguishes private yachts from commercial yachts (the latter chartered for profit and governed by the RMI's commercial-yacht standards). The owning vehicle is an RMI entity, or a qualified foreign maritime entity. The documentary file mirrors a ship registration — proof of ownership, the qualified owning entity, tonnage and, for commercial yachts, full statutory and class certification — with the registry's hallmark speed and flexibility for private yachts in occasional commercial use.
